The longing for the wide sea is an orchestral piece for an advanced level school orchestra of a music school. The string orchestra is complemented by one flute, one clarinet, one horn, one bassoon, one glockenspiel and the percussion. In addition to the relatively simple string part, light soloistic demands are placed on the wind players. The piece is intended as a metaphor for the longing of growing youth for the wide world. In the transition from child to adult, fears must be overcome and difficulties overcome.
Inspired by a poem by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry:
„If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up your men to get wood and to distribute the work, but teach them to long for the vast endless sea.“
